End of Child Marriage, amhara

In November 2012 I visited a community in Bahir Dar that was part of the End Of Child Marriage programme funded by DFID. Ethiopia has one of the highest rates of early marriage in the world, with one in two girls marrying before her 18th birthday and one in five girls marrying before the age of 15.

“Community conversations” are used to encourage communities to discuss the negative health and development consequences of child marriage as well as the importance of delaying first birth, spacing births, and preventing HIV and other STIs within marriage to safeguard the health of women and their children.

The picture with the three men won the DFID staff photo competition and it is currently displayed in DFID, 22 Whitehall (walk in, turn left and there it is). https://www.flickr.com/photos/dfid/sets/72157632587549550/detail/
